A local H&R Block location awarded one of its customers with $1,000 last week.

Garry Lineberry of Waterwheel Road, Boonville, is the Elkin area’s first winner in H&R Block’s national 1,000 Win $1,000 Sweepstakes. H&R Block of Elkin owners Richard Whitley and Wanda Whitley with their staff to presented Lineberry with a check for $1,000 on Tuesday.

The staff held a small reception for him, complete with cake and punch. Lineberry, a U.S. Army veteran of 21 years who retired as sergeant first class, said he doesn’t have any immediate plans for the money but is very glad to have won.

Owner Richard Whitley said H&R Block is pulling 1,000 filers every day as $1,000 winners. Nationally the company is giving away $1,000 to 1,000 customers every single day for 32 days, a total giveaway of $32 million. Anyone who files their taxes at a participating H&R Block office, including Elkin, before Feb. 15 can be automatically entered in the sweepstakes.

Sparta, Lenoir and Statesville have had two winners each so far, and Yadkinville, Taylorsville, Boone and Marion have had one winner each. Whitley said Lineberry is hopefully Elkin’s first winner of many.
