DOBSON — The Small Business Center at Surry Community College will be holding several free seminars and workshops in September at various locations in Surry and Yadkin counties.
• eBay Part 1: Basics of Selling will be held Sept. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Surry Community College in Dobson. It is the first seminar in a four-part series about selling on e-Bay. This is a great seminar for the dabbler or the entrepreneur wanting to make eBay a primary marketing tool. Learn best practices to use when setting up an account, listing items for sale, taking payments and shipping. Topics will include eBay features and policies, choosing formats and categories, writing descriptions that sell, submitting photos, using the help section, feedback, using PayPal, and shipping tips. The instructor will be Nick Hawks.
• 10 Ways to Grow Your Small Business will be covered at a free seminar on Sept. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville. Small business owners need quick, simple, executable ideas to move their business to the next level. Come learn the best practices successful owners are using now. The session might redirect your focus, reset priorities, or help avoid painful time and money-wasting activities. The session is a must for owners working to beat the clock, make a profit, and simplify their lives. Jim Blaylock will be the instructor.
• eBay Part 2: Beyond the Basics will be held Sept. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College, Dobson. It is the second seminar in a four-part series about selling on e-Bay. This session is for individuals having knowledge/experience of selling on eBay who want to establish a continual retail presence. Topics include: starting an eBay business; finding merchandise to sell; and resolving issues and feedback. The instructor will be Nick Hawks.
• eBay Part 3: Opening a Store will be held Sept. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College, Dobson. It is the third seminar in a four-part series about selling on e-Bay. This hands-on course is a fantastic way to learn a step-by-step approach if you are ready to become an eBay storeowner. Topics covered include: marketing your eBay store effectively and using the Quick Store Tune-up Feature. The instructor will be Nick Hawks.
• How to Understand Your Customers Using the DISC Profile will be covered at a seminar on Sept. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville. Small business owners must do two things well: deliver a good product and capture customers. Most owners are good at the first, bad at the second. This session will help owners become more effective at capturing new customers by talking in a language and style the customer appreciates. This is a fun and interactive session that will make you more effective dealing with people – a sales basic. Jim Blaylock will be the instructor.
• eBay Part 4: Mobile Selling will be held Sept. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College, Dobson. It is the final seminar in a four-part series about selling on e-Bay. The eBay apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone, Windows 8, and BlackBerry let you create a listing with a simple form. In this class, you will learn how to research sales trends, take pictures for listings, scan a barcode to catalog automatically, track your listing, and more. The instructor will be Nick Hawks.
• Sales and Use Tax 101 will be covered at a seminar on Sept. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Elkin Center. Learn all the basics of sales and use taxes. This seminar is ideal for retailers, or any business that wants to sell. Karen Bargsley will be the instructor.
• Instagram and YouTube for Small Business will be discussed at a seminar on Sept. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville. The social media platforms Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube are just a few of the graphical platforms that small businesses can use to inform and engage their clients and prospects through videos and images. When used correctly and with other social media platforms, these tools can drive web traffic and business opportunities. In this seminar, students will be introduced to these tools and the basics of using them. Teddy Burriss will be the instructor.
• Marketing Your Events on Twitter will be covered at a seminar on Sept. 23 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. With an estimated 302 million monthly users and 500 million tweets per day, Twitter is a powerful tool to create and share information instantly. Learn how to market your events on Twitter and track how successful those efforts are. Comparisons with other social media platforms will also be discussed in this seminar. Jessica Icenhour Roberts will be the instructor.
• How to Start a Small Business will be the first seminar in a four-part series. It will take place Sept. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. Understand the basics of starting a business that takes you from idea to opportunity in this seminar. Learn key strategies for start-up, financing and marketing as well as important information about legal issues, licensing, zoning, operations and more. Realize the importance of a self-assessment and how to evaluate the feasibility of your business idea. Discover the resources available to help you start and successfully operate your business. The instructor will be Chisa Pennix-Brown.
• Google Analytics will be covered at a seminar on Sept. 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. How many people visited your website this week? What parts of the world are they visiting from? How long did they stay? What page keeps people’s attention the longest? Google Analytics is a free tool to track and improve business. Students will start with setting up an account followed by adding the tracking code to the website. The majority of the class will cover navigating and understanding the basic reports. The main focus of this class will be an introduction to the short and long term benefits of utilizing Google Analytics to help grow website traffic. Mobile activity, social media, and live tracking will also be discussed. Boomer Sassmann will be the instructor.
