A Surry County funeral home has opened a memorial chapel in Jonesville.

Spencer Funeral Home, Inc. of Mount Airy owners said their Jonesville location is called Spencer Memorial Chapel. The chapel is located at 207 N. Bridge St.

“The Spencer family has been providing funeral services locally since 1961. We date back four generations. For us it’s an honor to serve Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes and surrounding counties,” said owner Edward N. Spencer. “Opening the chapel allows us to serve a significant portion of the community from Surry County and the eastern parts of Wilkes County. The location is convenient for our families in need.”

Spencer said that the chapel has ample parking. The interior of the building was redeveloped to meet chapel and service needs. The location may seat up to 100 people comfortably.

“We pride ourselves in helping families get through difficult moments… We help families pre-arrange for such decisions. One of the strongest reasons why people rely on the Spencer family is trust. Our chapel extends into the heart of the community and we look forward to many decades to come,” said Spencer.

According to Spencer, the family business originated in 1935 when Lee S. Perry and C.H. Spencer purchased an old two-story house on Short Street in Madison. The duo started what is still known and operating as Perry and Spencer Funeral Home of Madison and Eden.

In 1961, C.H. Spencer’s son, Edward J. Spencer, with his wife, Patty Joyce Spencer, ventured to Mount Airy to start their own funeral home. In 1980, Spencer’s Funeral Home relocated to its present location 824 N. Main St.

In 1978, Edward N. Spencer, the son of Edward J. Spencer, attended John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee, both he and his sister, Janet McDonald, were in mortuary school at the same time. They graduated and returned home to continue in the family business.

Edward N. Spencer serves as president of Spencer Funeral Home. Spencer’s wife, Teressa F. Spencer, is actively involved in the family business.

“This is a way of life for us. This is what we do… We’re here to help others,” said Teressa F. Spencer.

At the chapel, the youngest generation of the Spencer family, Edward Spencer Jr., said growing up in the family business has helped him understand the intricacies related to families and the deceased.

“My brother (Eric Spencer) and I have been raised in the business. We appreciate being in business. This is a business that requires total respect. I am happy about the opening of the chapel. It’s a great opportunity for those in need,” said Edward Spencer Jr.

Edward N. Spencer said neither the funeral home, nor will the chapel, ever turn away a family regardless of their financial situation.

“For us it’s about helping the family and meeting the wishes of the deceased. We work with everyone. Not one funeral is alike, and neither is a chapel memorial service. Each service is always crafted for each family,” said Edward N. Spencer. “We are honored to provide a service to the community. The Lord continues to bless us each day.”
