JONESVILLE and DOBSON - North Carolina Highway Patrol and local emergency officials have responded to two major wrecks involving tractor-trailers on I-77 today. The first accident occured on southbound Interstate 77 at mile marker 81 just outside of Jonesville.

According to Yadkin Emergency Services Director Keith Vestal, the accident involved two tractor-trailers, one of which was carrying a “load of mixed hazadous materials.” The leak was minor, Vestal said, and the owner of the tractor-trailer sent a clean-up crew from Charlotte to clean up the spill.

Traffic was diverted to U.S. 21 while the wreck and HazMat clean-up was in progress.

Traffic was backed up on I-77 for sometime however, which lead to a second collision, also of two tractor-trailers at mile marker 85 near Dobson.

Surry Emergency Services Director John Shelton said a tractor-trailer was struck from the rear by a second tractor-trailer. Shelton said all those involved were in “good condition.” Two were considered “walking wounded” and two additional people were transported by ambulance to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.

As of 3 p.m., Highway Patrol indicated that the accident at mile marker 81 had been cleared. Shelton said that they hoped to have both southbound lanes of I-77 at mile marker 85 reopened within two hours.

Traffic is being diverted off I-77 at exit 93 or onto I-74.

Highway Patrol is still investigating these accidents.
