Team work and fun were ever-present Friday afternoon as eighth-graders at Elkin Middle School got a taste of three events in which the high school JROTC Raider team competes during its competitions — the rope bridge, the Humvee pull and the litter carry.

Each year, Elkin High School’s JROTC program hosts two Middle School Days, during which the younger students get a look at what the program entails and what they will experience if they choose to enroll in the classes. In addition to JROTC curriculum classes, the program also includes drill team, color guard and Raider team.

Friday’s activities gave the middle-schools the chance to get hands-on experience with the Raider team events, as the students were split up in to eight-person teams to compete for prizes — cold Dr. Peppers and lanyards and T-shirts from the National Guard post in Elkin, which was on hand to provide the Humvee for the pull competition.

Maj. Roy Ferguson, lead instructor for EHS’s JROTC program, said 60 high-schoolers have enrolled in the two semesters this year school year, which is a great participation rate for a small school.

Also, for the first time in school history, three female cadets made the Raider A team — Kylie Thomas, Harper Leibbert and Katie Brown.

Next week, the JROTC will have its change of command ceremony during which cadet Laken Lloyd will follow her brother’s footsteps and become commander of the Elkin High School JROTC unit. Her brother, Grant Lloyd, is in his first year at The Citadel this year, to which he earned a full scholarship.

Laken Lloyd explained Friday that in years past, the Middle School Day events have included demonstrations of the drill with platoons marching and color guard presentations, but Friday’s hands-on event was a better opportunity to give the middle-schools a way to get involved.

“In marching, they just watched, so this is much better. I think the students are more involved and get to do the things we do,” Lloyd said.

When Lloyd was in middle school, JROTC didn’t have a day to show off to the younger students what the program was about, it started her freshman year.

“I joined because of my brother my sophomore year. I was hesitant in joining, but once I did I loved it and I knew I wanted to be one of the top [cadets],” she said.
