Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Surry Community College will host a Harvest Operations course for students to learn about harvest operations and gain firsthand experience in what it takes to make a bottle of wine. Students will pick fruit from the on-campus vineyard and process it in the winery. The class will meet in Room 113 of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology, 630 S. • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the 19th annual Sweet Potato Festival will be held in the historic village of Rockford. Events will include the Log Whisperer, historically-themed tunes and storytelling by R.G. Food will include sweet potato pie, sonker, cake, fudge, sweet potato coffee, country ham biscuits, chicken stew, pintos and cornbread. • 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., a quarterly veterans coffee will be held at Sagebrush Steakhouse, 2000 Woodland Drive, Mount Airy. The event is open to veterans of all ages and military services and provide an opportunity for local veterans to connect with other veterans, share stories and enjoy free coffee, doughnuts and conversation. • 1:30 to 6 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Elkin Rescue Squad, 946 N. Bridge St., Elkin, sponsored by Duke Energy retirees.

• 7 to 8:30 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host “A Sandhills Saga” presented by Dr. Lynda Black, a local writer. As she researched her novel-in-progress, set in Moore County, she discovered her own family’s past. During the presentation, she’ll weave together family stories, history and her writing to provide a glimpse of life in early 1900s in the Sandhills of North Carolina.

• 2:30 to 7 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Maple Springs Baptist Church, 150 Maple Springs Baptist Church, Ronda.

Sept. 24

• 7 to 10 a.m., Forbush Baptist Church, 3917 Old U.S. 421 Hwy E., Yadkinville, will host a country breakfast to benefit Yadkin Christian Ministries. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will consist of grilled tenderloin, gravy, biscuits, grits, eggs, applesauce and drinks. Ticket are $8 each. • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival will be held in downtown Elkin including vendors, food, crafts, and the pumpkin weigh-ins.

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the 10th annual Country Quilt Show will take place at Galloway Episcopal Church, 312 W. Main St., Elkin, in conjunction with the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival. No admission is charged, but donations to the church are welcome. The event, sponsored by the Foothills Quilt Guild, will include a porch sale at 315 W. Main St., Elkin, for the same hours.

• 3 to 9 p.m., the inaugural Big Elkin BrewFest will be held at the Elkin Municipal Park, with live music, a host of North Carolina breweries, food and more. Tickets are available at the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce.

• The Friends of the Elkin Public Library will host their annual book sale at the library during library hours.

• Noon to 4:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at First United Methodist Church, 210 Marion St., Pilot Mountain.

• 5 to 7 p.m., the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in collaboration with the High Country Rural Planning Organization (RPO) will hold a public involvement workshops to obtain public input on the Wilkes County Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) at East Wilkes High School. A CTP is a long-range multi-modal transportation plan with a 25- to 30-year planning period.

• 7 to 8:30 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host Craft Cafe: Coloring Challenge for Adults, with all supplies provided as well as door prizes and refreshments.

Sept. 27

• 1 to 5:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Flat Rock Elementary School, 1539 E. Pine St., Mount Airy.

• 4 to 5 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host LEGO time for those ages 6 to 10 who want to come and build. No reservations required. The event is funded by the Elkin Public Library Endowment.

Sept. 30

• 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Forbush High School, 1521 Falcon Road, East Bend.

• 1 p.m., the Elkin Jonesville Shrine Club will hold its annual golf tournament at Silo Run Golf Club, Boonville, with a four-plyaer captain’s choice format. Entry fee is $240 per team ($60 per player), with cash prizes for the winning teams plus closest to pin and most accurate drive prizes.
