Community Calendar


Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. If a submission is not showing, it is due to the chronological order of the events. Events to be included are at our discretion, and information is subject to editing. Aug. 12

• 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., a port-a-pit barbecue chicken fundraiser will be held benefitting Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care at the Yadkinville United Methodist Church, pick up only. Aug. 13

• 9 a.m., Bikers for Kids will host a bike and car ride to benefit Yadkin Special Olympics. The ride will begin at Bojangles in Jonesville and end at Sheetz in Yadkinville, with registration at 9 a.m. and ride starting at 11 a.m. Cost is $10 for bikes, $15 for cars. • 1 to 5 p.m., a free stroke risk clinic will be held at Hugh Chatham Urgent Care, 912 S. State St., Yadkinville. The screening is free with no health insurance needed.

• 1 to 5 p.m., the Surry County Historical Society will host a free open house at the Edwards-Franklin House, 4132 Haystack Road, Mount Airy.

Aug. 14

• 12:30 to 5 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Bannertown Baptist Church, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy.

• 7 to 9 p.m., the Elkin Public Library will host an Open Mic Poetry Night at Brushy Mountain Winery, 125 W. Main St., featuring Bill Griffin, Stacey Libbert, Lynda Black, Millie Hiatt and more. • 10 to 11:30 a.m., the monthly support group in Surry County for the Lupus Foundation of American North Carolina Chapter will meet at the Mount Airy Public Library, 145 Rockford St., Mount Airy, in the multipurpose room.

• 2 to 4 p.m., Historic Richmond Hill Law School, the restored home of Judge Richmond Pearson, 4641 Law School Road, East Bend, will be open for tours.

• 3 to 6 p.m., West Yadkin Elementary School will host its open house for students in prekindergarten through sixth grade. Parents are invited to visit their child’s classroom and meet the teacher.

• 4 p.m., the Yadkin Valley Cruisers cruise-in will be held at the Yadkin Plaza Shopping Center with music and door prizes.

• 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Surry County Health and Nutrition Center, 118 Hamby Road, Dobson.

Aug. 26

• 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, 180 Parkwood Drive, Elkin.

• Noon to 4:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Lowe’s Home Improvement, 429 CC Camp Road, Elkin.

Aug. 27

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Jonesville Public Library will host its Back to School Bash with games, food, bounce house, prizes, crafts and more, free for all. • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Wilkes Art Gallery, 913 C St., North Wilkesboro, will host a soft pastel workshop taught by visiting artist Malia Bryngelson. This is an introductory workshop for those with little to no experience with soft pastels. Students will complete a small painting and all art materials will be provided. Students should bring reference photos, and some photos will be provided. There will be a half-hour lunch break, so students should pack a lunch. Cost is $470. Class is limited to 10 people. Sept. 10

• 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Stone Mountain State Park will celebrate the centennial of the North Carolina State Park system in conjunction with its 47th birthday celebration by hosting its annual old-fashioned day. Events will include displays and demonstrations on quilting, blacksmithing, looming, fishing lure tying, beekeeping, basket weaving, pottery and more. There will be food, music and games for the children. Those attending are encouraged to carpool as much as possible. There will be no pets allowed in the event area.

Sept. 12-Nov. 14

• 6:30 to 8:15 p.m., the Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat For Humanity will be sponsoring Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University class each Monday at the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce office next door to the Habitat ReStore on Market Street. Rate is $50 per person or couple, and those interested should register by calling 336-526-2277.

Sept. 15

• 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Shaggin for Shelter and Dancing for Dollars with DIRTROAD Entertainment “spinning requests” will be held at The Liberty, 222 E. Main St., Elkin, to benefit The Ark. A shag contest will be held at 7 p.m. with a $10 entry fee and a grand prize Fairfield package. A $9 dinner and cash bar will be available throughout the night. • The Friends of the East Bend Public Library will host a community yard sale on Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at the library on Flint Hill Road, East Bend. • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the 40th annual Yadkin Valley Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Yadkinville with agricultural displays, artwork, vendors, musicians, food vendors and more. The Third Branch Cafe will be open as well, with entertainment and interactive exhibits set up on the stroll way and pavilion area. • 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., a quarterly veterans coffee will be held at Sagebrush Steakhouse, 2000 Woodland Drive, Mount Airy. The event is open to veterans of all ages and military services and provide an opportunity for local veterans to connect with other veterans, share stories and enjoy free coffee, doughnuts and conversation. Government and nonprofit organizations who provide support programs and activities for veterans are invited to attend the events to share information about their programs. • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival will be held in downtown Elkin including vendors, food, crafts, and the pumpkin weigh-ins.

• 3 to 9 p.m., the inaugural Big Elkin BrewFest will be held at the Elkin Municipal Park, with live music, a host of North Carolina breweries, food and more. Tickets are available at the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Sept. 30

• 1 p.m., the Elkin Jonesville Shrine Club will hold its annual golf tournament at Silo Run Golf Club, Boonville, with a four-plyaer captain’s choice format. Entry fee is $240 per team ($60 per player), with cash prizes for the winning teams plus closest to pin and most accurate drive prizes. • 11 a.m., Safe Kids of Surry and Wilkes counties will hold their first benefit golf tournament with a shotgun start at Cedarbrook Country Club, 222 Country Club Drive, State Road. The day will include a $10,000 hole-in-one contest, longest drive contest, closest to pin prizes, complementary range balls, free drinks and lunch.
