Traphill Road to be closed beginning Monday

Improvements coming to Wilkes County

Staff Report

ASHEVILLE — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a portion of Traphill Road in Wilkes County starting Monday in order for the North Wilkesboro Bridge Maintenance Unit to replace a pipe in disrepair.

The road will be closed at Hutchinson Dairy Farm starting Monday through Aug 17. Drivers in the area will have to take an eight-mile detour with signs marking each turn.

The work crew will replace the existing metal pipe with a wider aluminized pipe. The pipe is need of replacement because it is outdated and could cause problems for area residents.

Engineers say it is better to replace the pipe now rather than during winter months when weather could hamper construction and increase delays.

Motorists heading north will start on Christian Home Road, go left on Crossroads Road, go left on Stoney Ridge School Road, go left on Billings Hill Church Road and left on Traphill Mill Road.

Transportation officials remind motorists to follow construction signs, stay alert and obey speed limits.
