Community Calendar


Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. If a submission is not showing, it is due to the chronological order of the events. Events to be included are at our discretion, and information is subject to editing. • Sparta will celebration the Fourth of July with several events throughout the weekend. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday with the Mid-Atlantic Pro Rodeo sponsored by the Sparta Lions Club at the Alleghany Fairgrounds on U.S. 21. The annual Fourth of July parade will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. along Main Street featuring homemade floats, lawn mower racers, classic cars, horseback riders and the Alleghany High School marching band. Then from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday will be a free concert and dancing at Crouse Park Amphitheater. Those attending should bring a lawn chair or blanket. On July 4, the community is invited to tailgate in the Alleghany High School parking lot at 6 p.m. before the fireworks while the Alleghany High Boosters sponsor games like dunking booth and cornhole tournament and food vendors will be on hand. Live music will be provided too, and free watermelon from D.W. Miles.

• 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., the Mountain Park Ruritan Club will host its annual Fourth of July celebration beginning with a parade at 10 a.m. followed by games, musical entertainment, food vendors and more on the grounds of Mountain Park Elementary School. The evening will conclude with a headliner band at 6 p.m. and fireworks around 9:30 p.m. A $1,000 raffle giveaway will be held at 7 p.m.
