Two Elkin women injured in motorcycle wreck

Staff Report

Two women were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a motorcycle wreck on Bessie’s Chapel Church Road, north of Elkin, shortly after 11 a.m. Friday.

According to Trooper J.R. Hall of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Amy Wetherholt, 42, of Dobbins Mill Road, Elkin, and her passenger, Melissa Shores, 40, of the same address, were traveling west on Bessie’s Chapel Church Road when Shores reported something ran out in front of them.

Whether something ran out in front of the motorcycle or not is not something Hall said he has proof of, but he did have proof that the motorcycle hit the brakes and went off the roadway to the right, where it struck a mailbox and the ditch, coming to rest in the ditch.

Both women were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, with Shores taken by ambulance and Wetherholt by AirCare medical helicopter. Hall said he was told on the scene that Wetherholt was in critical condition.

There will be no charges in the single-vehicle accident, Hall said.

Responding to the call were Jot-um-Down Volunteer Fire Department, Mountain Park and Dobson rescue squads, and Surry County EMS.
