BOONVILLE — The Starmount High School class of 2016 was honored Wednesday at a commencement ceremony held in the high school’s gymnasium. The bleachers were packed with friends and family there to celebrate this important milestone.

The Starmount marching band provided musical accompaniment for the event, playing “Pomp and Circumstance” as the seniors entered as well as the National Anthem.

Following a prayer led by senior Callie Marhenke, Yadkin County School Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin shared a few words of wisdom.

Martin encouraged the students to take time to thank their families for their support.

“My prayer is that you will find much success, that you will find much happiness,” Martin told the students.

To much applause, Principal Cody Hemric welcomed the class of 2016 with his favorite statement, “it’s a great day to be a Ram.”

Several seniors addressed their classmates and shared their thoughts on their time at Starmount and what all they have to look forward to.

In her welcome to the class of 2016, senior Julianna Marzelli also thanked the school board for their support.

The Starmount Show Choir, joined by their senior members, performed “Seasons of Love.”

Sharing senior reflections was Lauren Stone.

“This is a tremendous honor as I stand here before you today to celebrate our many accomplishments,” Stone said.

Andrew Smythers shared his thoughts on the future of the class of 2016. He also shared his love for Starmount and what the school had meant to him. Smythers said that though in the fall his new motto will be “it’s a great day to be a Tarheel,” it will still always be a good to be a Ram as well.

Hemric expressed his great pride in the 144 seniors of the Starmount class of 2016, many of whom plan to go on to attend two- or four-year colleges. Four students plan to pursue service in the armed forces and many will be heading into the workforce.

Several students received special recognition at the commencement ceremony. Receiving the William H. Danforth “I Dare You” award were Jack Dickerson and Amber Hurst. Honored with citizenship awards were Nicholas Brown and Lauren Stone. Best All Around recognition was given to Andrew Smythers and Ashley Johnson.

Following the diploma presentations, Katie Roberts gave a closing prayer.
