Man dies after falling off building

THURMOND — A Thurmond resident and community center volunteer fell off the roof of the Thurmond Community Center and died early Wednesday morning.

Roby Dale Brooks, 72, of Thurmond, fell off of the roof of the Thurmond Community Center while cleaning out the gutters with another volunteer on Wednesday morning, according to Capt. Brandon Absher of the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.

Brooks slipped and fell between 10 to 12 feet and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk, Absher said. Wilkes County EMS and first responders were dispatched to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders arrived. The fall was reported as accidental, as no foul play was involved.

Brooks was a volunteer at the Thurmond Community Center and helped with maintenance and other things around the area when needed. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Archer Division, where he worked for 38 years. Brooks was also a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and a member of the Cedarbrook Country Club.
