WILKESBORO — The Wilkes County School System held its retirement dinner on Wednesday, honoring all teachers and staff members retiring in the 2015-2016 year. The dinner was held at the Stone Family Center for the Performing Arts in North Wilkesboro and treated guests to an evening of dinner, music and remembrance.

“It’s an honor for all our retirees,” said Lisa Holcomb of Wilkes County Schools’ Human Resources. “We have 30 retirees for the school system this year and some have served us for over 30 years. It’s an opportunity to take time to treat them to a nice dinner and have folks come out and recognize their contributions. These jobs range from child nutrition workers to teachers to custodians to clerical workers. Everybody makes a difference in the school system and everyone has a chance to be remembered.”

The dinner began with a welcome from Dr. Westley Wood, executive director of Human Resources for Wilkes County Schools. This was followed by live music from the North Wilkes High School Northlanders Choir directed by Michelle Sullivan. After a brief invocation by school board Chairman Rudy Holbrook, guests enjoyed a dinner catered by the Brushy Mountain Smokehouse and Creamery. Retirees were presented with a plaque thanking them for their years of service and pictures were taken.

According to Superintendent Dr. Mark Byrd, this year’s retirees hold a total of 767 years and four months of service to the Wilkes County School System.

“My question is how many people’s lives do you think these people made an impression on in that amount of time?” asked Byrd. “How many people’s lives do you think they made better because of what they did in a classroom, on a field, in a cafeteria, on a bus, or in an office over the course of those years? How many people remember them for what they did? How many people when they reach retirement age can walk out the door of their job and know they left that kind of impression?”

As the ceremony came to a close, Byrd said, “I hope you enjoy a life filled with optional teacher workdays. As you get to decide what you get to do with each day. And most important, don’t let a day go by that you don’t reflect on how many people’s lives are better because of what they learned from you.”
