Yadkin man dies in single-car wreck

JONESVILLE — A Yadkin County man died in a single-car wreck Saturday evening in the Jonesville area.

Mario Benitez, 41, was traveling south on Swan Creek Road about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the accident occurred, reported Sgt. P.M. Dixson of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to Dixson, investigators believe Benitez became distracted by an animal in the vehicle, and his vehicle ran off the road to the right into a private yard where it struck a tree. Benitez was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene from his injuries.

Benitez was not believed to be texting when the accident occurred, Dixson said, noting that the driver’s phone was in his pocket. Instead it is believed a rooster in the vehicle got loose and distracted him, “but we’ll never know that,” said Dixson.

The incident occurred on Swan Creek Road near its intersection with Howell School Road.

Also responding to the scene were members of Arlington Fire Department and Yadkin County EMS.
