About 80 people enjoyed the art exhibit at the Foothills Arts Council on Friday evening. The sixth annual Youth Art Expo featured 101 pieces of artwork from seven area schools — Elkin High, East Wilkes High, Surry Central High, East Wilkes Middle, Elkin Elementary, Dobson Elementary and Rockford Elementary.

“We always have great attendance for the YAE and this year was no exception,” Leighanne Martin Wright, executive director of the arts council, said.

Judging this year was artist Rosy Beverley.

“Every piece in this show has merit,” she said. “Judging is a difficult task when faced with such great efforts. I love folk art and my tastes tend to lean that way. I look for the unpredictable. But that’s just me! Another judge would have another take entirely, so students, keep it up, all of you!”

A new feature of this year’s event was a $100 door prize. The names of the art teachers attending were put on paintbrushes. Laura Gaylord, Main Street manager for the town of Elkin, did the honors and pulled a paintbrush out for the prize. The winner was Jill Bellia, art teacher at Elkin Elementary, who said the prize will go toward the bottle cap mural project she is planning.

Winners in the lower elementary (K-2) category were: first place – Kileigh Darnell, first grade, Dobson Elementary; second place – Jocelyn De Santiago, kindergarten, Rockford Elementary; third place – Kinley Cook, kindergarten, Elkin Elementary; honorable mention – Alaya Caldwell, kindergarten, Rockford Elementary.

Winners in upper elementary (3-5) were: first place – Ella Priddy, fourth grade, Rockford Elementary; second place – Joshua Couch, third grade, Elkin Elementary; third place – Joselyn Ruiz Zelaya, fourth grade, Elkin Elementary.

Winners in the middle school category were: first place – Sophia Somers, sixth grade, East Wilkes Middle; second place – Makayla King, seventh grade, East Wilkes Middle; third place – Haley Graham, seventh grade, East Wilkes Middle.

Winners in the high school category were: first place – Makenzie Mooney, 12th grade, Surry Central; second place – Gracie Wilcox, East Wilkes High; third place – Julie Neumark, 12th grade, Elkin High; honorable mention – Kaitlyn Foster, East Wilkes High; honorable mention – Rachel Coffey, 11th grade, Surry Central; honorable mention – Brandy Fuentes, 10th grade, Elkin High.

“The Foothills Arts Council appreciates the support of local art teachers and students who make this a great community event,” Wright said.
