The Elkin Valley Trails volunteers are meeting to extend a section of a local trail on Dec. 5 and Dec. 19.
When complete the trail will be a 6.2-mile loop for biking, hiking, running and walking. This trail is adjacent to the E & A Rail-Trail in Elkin and will eventually circle the reservoir and include the existing 140-foot bridge and a new 178-foot bridge to be completed this spring and early summer.
Volunteers will meet both Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. about a quarter mile west of North Bridge and Sheetz on Hwy. 268 Bypass headed toward Wilkesboro on the left side of the road by a fence opening.
The work entails benching and cutting new trail in a section of forest by a meandering stream and waterfall. The group is looking for volunteers to turn out both days for the work. Work will move forward rain or shine, and those attending should wear appropriate clothing such as long sleeved shirts or jackets, gloves, and the like. Volunteers are also asked to take water and a snack, as well as a shovel, hoe, garden rake or pruners.
Organizers will also have tools on hand for those who need them.
