Elkin firefighters and other local responders will be taking part in live burn training at a house in Elkin on Monday evening. The structure, located at 265 Oak Grove Road, sustained damage from a previous fire, and the property owners have been kind enough to allow Surry Community College instructors use of the building for fire training purposes.
As a result, the section of Oak Grove Road between Wesley Drive and Mountain View Road will be temporarily closed to most traffic on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. Motorists and pedestrians should avoid this area if at all possible while the training takes place. Those living in the area immediately affected by the road closure should follow the directions provided by firefighters to safely access their homes during the training event.
“Giving firefighters instruction in a hands-on, live fire experience is an excellent means of training, and constant skills updating is essential to efficient performance”, said Elkin Capt. Theresa Knops.
Local firefighters are always in search of opportunities to practice their skills, and vacant buildings such as this one allow responders to gain such valuable experience and training towards protecting the public. Elkin property owners and developers are encouraged to contact the Elkin Fire Department at 336-794-6481 if they have a structure that might be of use for training purposes.
