Fifty-three veterans. This is the number of church members in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church who have served the country, and all were honored during a special veterans tribute as a portion of Sunday’s service at the Elkin church. Another 147 veterans are buried in the church’s cemetery.

“Pleasant Hill Baptist Church is, first and foremost, a light in the community to uplift the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” said Christine Williams, who with the members of the Women’s Ministry Team organized and hosted the service and catered lunch to follow.

Prior to Sunday’s service, Williams did some investigative work. She had each veteran pose for a picture without letting on for what it would be used. She also called each of the 53 veterans and spent time listening to them share the story of their time in the military.

All of this work culminated in the publishing of a book “Honoring those who served,” as it reads on the cover of the book. The pages inside include a prayer for veterans, the history behind why Veterans Day is observed, and then the photo and story of each of the veterans.

Sunday’s worship service begin with a hymn, followed by a procession of the veterans to reserved seating in the pews in the front and center of the sanctuary and the presentation of colors by the Elkin High School JROTC.

“In honor of you, our veterans, we say ‘thank you,’” said Williams as she read the back page of the book, which the veterans were later surprised with a copy to take home. “Thank you for all the minutes, the hours, the days, the months, and the years you so unselfishly served in the Armed Forces all around the world to help defend this great country, the United States of America.

“Your services are appreciated each and every day as we exercise our freedoms — freedom of speech and press, freedom of movement, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, political and economic freedoms. You have fought for the Constitution and Bill of Rights to protect American values so we can remain a democracy,” she said.

Following a roll call of the church’s veterans by Guylene Cox and Geri Gilliam, the JROTC cadets took over the service with a veterans program which included a flag-folding ceremony, the veterans prayer and why Veterans Day is celebrated, and a slideshow tribute to veterans.

Even the sermon by the church’s pastor, Danny Dodds, who also is a veteran, was about the members of the congregations’ civic duties and the differences in those civic duties and their religious duties.

“We can’t wrap our minds around what these veterans have done for this world,” said Williams during the service. “I’ve been touched by the stories over the weeks from World War II to Vietnam to the National Guard, and it is still going today.”

She said, based on a 40-hour work week, the church’s 53 veterans have about 350 years of service.

During the lunch held for the veterans and their families, John Mathis approached the veterans about taking up a collection of funds to purchase a flag pole to be erected in front of the church’s new preschool being built, and honoring the donations with a plaque noting the veterans of the church funded the pole.

Veterans of the church include:
