Public votes needed to obtain technology grant for Elkin Fire Department

The Elkin Fire Department has an opportunity to receive $25,000 in grant funding, but the department needs the public’s help as part of the process.

In cooperation with the Leary Firefighters Foundation, the company Nest has set aside funds to assist two fire departments with purchasing new equipment and implementing new technology into their operations. The two lucky fire departments will be chosen from a pool of 10 finalists, and those 10 finalists will be selected based on the number of votes each department receives online at http://nest.com/thanks/.

“This is an amazing chance for our fire department to improve its capabilities at no cost to our taxpayers,” said Elkin Fire Chief Mike Morton.

If the department is selected as a finalist, Morton said the department would probably look at improving its communications capabilities with the grant’s support, as there are far too few functioning portable radios available to the town’s firefighters.

“We have an immense need for improved radio communications, because when our personnel are exposed to danger they need the lifeline that a dependable radio provides,” Morton said.

The online voting process is open now, but it will only remain accessible until midnight on Saturday. Votes must be cast online at http://nest.com/thanks/. A person may only vote once during the campaign, but each vote will receive double credit if accompanied by a brief story explaining why the fire department deserves the grant.
