• Surry County Farm Bureau is collecting canned foods and other nonperishable items for the the local chapter’s food pantry. Surry County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers program is helping feed Americans who face hunger every day. Items can be donated at the local Farm Bureau office, 112 N. White St., Dobson.

Oct. 22

• 10 a.m., Elkin Public Library, 111 N. Front St., Elkin, hosts its Book Babies program lasting 20 to 25 minutes each Thursday for children age birth to 24 months and their caregiver. They are free.

• 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Surry Goes Pink/Dig Pink fundraiser will be held at the Betty Kay Vaughn Clock Tower on the Dobson campus of SCC to raise money for breast cancer research. Later that evening, a Dig Pink volleyball game will take place in the SCC gym, 630 S. Main St., Dobson.

Oct. 23

• 10 a.m. for 2- and 3-year-olds; 11 a.m. for 4- and 5-year-olds, Elkin Public Library, 111 N. Front St., Elkin, hosts its Preschool Story Hour each Friday. The theme is Loving the Leaves.

• 1 p.m., a 100th-year celebration of Elkin Graded School will be held beginning with a program in the Dixon Auditorium for Elkin Middle and Elkin High School students as they learn the history of Elkin Graded School from speakers. The celebration will end at 1 p.m. with a closing ceremony at Elkin Elementary School as a special plaque honoring those who helped build Elkin Graded School will be placed on the Bell Tower. The closing ceremony is open to the community, who is welcome to place items of special mementos from the school on exhibit. • 6 to 9 p.m., Roaring River Fire Department will host a turkey shoot at the shooting range at 700 Ranse Staley Road. It will be 12 gauge and 20 gauge shot guns with full chokes only. For more information, call David Key at 336-469-8988.

Oct. 24

• 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Starmount High School will benefit from a Flow Buick of Winston-Salem one-day test-drive event. For each person who test drives a Buick at the school, with no purchase necessary, the school will earn $10. If there are more than 100 test drives, Buick will donate $20 per valid test drive. Participants must be 21 or older, possess a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

• 1 to 5 p.m., the 36th annual Sonker Festival will be held at the Edwards-Franklin House, 4132 Haystack Road, Mount Airy, featuring old-time and bluegrass music, quilters, Civil War exhibit, flat foot dancing, sonkers and beverages. Admission is free with a $3 charge for each serving of sonker and $1 for beverages. Bring a lawn chair.

Oct. 26

• 4 to 5 p.m., the Elkin Public Library will host Poetry, Nonsense, and More.

• 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Elkin Public Library will host Halloween stories with Alan Hoal.

Oct. 27

• 4 to 5 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host a boys and girls LEGO time for children ages 6 to 10. The event is funded by the Elkin Public Library Foundation. To reserve a spot at one of the two LEGO time events, call 336-835-5586. A second event will be held Oct. 13 from 3 to 4 p.m.

• 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Surry Community College will have a Halloween Spooktacular for students, faculty and staff in the Grand Hall, Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology with games and food tickets available for purchase. There will be a Spooky Haunted Trail and hayride, pizza, candy, soft drinks, costume contest, activities, games and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project.

• 6:30 p.m., the Northwestern Regional Library will host a Mystery Dinner Theater fall fundraiser at First Baptist Church fellowship hall in Mount Airy. The play will be “Murder by Numbers,” a murder mystery by Vicky Town and will be performed by local actors. Tickets are $20 and available at all NWRL libaries, and seating will be limited. • 6 to 7:30 p.m., Home Instead Senior Care and Pruitt Health have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association of Western Carolina to help those living with Alzheimer’s Disease or a related memory disorder through free seminars in the community. These seminars are for family members who may have a loved-one living with dementia, care partners and professional caregivers. Tri-county Dementia Education Seminars: “Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors.” Communication is more than just talking and listening.” Seminars will be held at Pruitt Health, 560 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin. • Noon to 1 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month, a free informational webinar is held for those interested in learning about the Guardian ad Litem program. • 6:30 to 8 p.m., 4G Club – Girls Growing in God’s Grace, is held each Thursday at the Fairfield Inn’s Conference Room in Elkin. It is a meeting for girls 13 to 25 to come together and bond. Regular rap sessions are held about depression, fear, anger, jealously and other topics the girls want to discuss.
