Alleged drunk driver hits pole

A power pole remains hanging from the lines Wednesday morning after Elkin Police Department Capt. Kim Robison reported an alleged drunk driver struck the pole Tuesday. The accident occurred about 10:20 p.m. when William Brendle, 21, of Elkin, reportedly drove his 2006 Honda SUV into the pole on Elk Spur Street across from Elkin Middle School. Robison reported Brendle’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit during the roadside breathalyzer test. She reported speed and alcohol were a factor in the incident, and Brendle has been charged with driving while impaired and careless and reckless driving.
