Aug. 27 & 29

• 7 p.m., Alleghany County will host the performance of Western Piedmont Symphony, Music in the Park, in the Alleghany County Community Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at Sparky’s Coffee Shop, Becca’s Backwoods Bean, The Alleghany County Library, and the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce. Tickets also can be purchased for this event, and other performances by the Western Piedmont Symphony by visiting www.wpsymphony.org.

• Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop will have a three-day bag sale. Fill a brown paper bag for only $3. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shop will be closed Aug. 31 through Sept. 7 to stock the shelves with new items and will reopen on Sept. 8. Clothes, shoes, toys, books, housewares will be available.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a Girl Scout registration event will be held at the Elkin Girl Scout Hut, 410 Memorial Park Drive, Elkin. Girls ages 5-18 interested in joining Girl Scouts for the coming year are invited to attend.

• 10 a.m., Elkin Public Library, 111 N. Front St., Elkin, hosts its Book Babies program lasting 20 to 25 minutes each Thursday for children age birth to 24 months and their caregiver. They are free.

Sept. 12

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the sixth annual Remember Rockford Families Reunion is planned. The day’s events will begin at the Rockford Park/Grant-Burrus Hotel Site and will continue through the village to the Rockford Methodist Church. Activities include sharing of family and local history, tours of the historic buildings, traditional music by Ashley Holyfield and Devin Matthews, and a wine tasting by RagApple Lassie Vineyard at the 1830 Mark York Tavern. A BBQ lunch will be served at the Rockford Methodist Church and is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Bring family photos and histories to share. A copier will be available in the church. • 6 to 7:30 p.m., Home Instead Senior Care and Pruitt Health have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association of Western Carolina to help those living with Alzheimer’s Disease or a related memory disorder through free seminars in the community. These seminars are for family members who may have a loved-one living with dementia, care partners and professional caregivers. Tri-county Dementia Education Seminars: “Know The 10 Signs.” Communication is more than just talking and listening.” Seminars will be held at Pruitt Health, 560 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin. • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Old Fashion Day will be held at Stone Mountain State Park. This day is set aside at promote the park’s local heritage. It is also a day to enjoy the traditions of yesterday. Different types of traditions will be on display including quilting, blacksmithing, looming, fishing lure tying. Hide tanning, bee keeping and many more displays will be available to enjoy along with bluegrass music. All participants are encouraged to carpool as much as possible. No pets allowed in the event area.

• Noon to 1 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month, a free informational webinar is held for those interested in learning about the Guardian ad Litem program.
