A crowd turned out at The Liberty in downtown Elkin on Thursday night to get their first taste of the craft beers that will be featured by Angry Troll Brewing.

The brewery, which is slated to open sometime early next year, will be located in the lower level of The Liberty. The group’s crowd funding effort, which includes unique incentive packages for donors, wrapped up Friday evening. “It’s very important for us to engage the community and this was our opportunity to invite the people directly here in our community to come taste the beers we’ve been experimenting with and help support our effort here,” said Louis Jeroslow, brewer/chemist for the operation.

The wine industry has been a longtime venture in the area and craft breweries are now popping up as well. According to NCBeer.org, “North Carolina is home to 132 breweries and brewpubs — the most of any state south of Pennsylvania and east of Texas.” Skull Camp Brewery was the first to open its doors in Elkin.

Jeroslow said he felt the growing beer industry would be a great addition and partner well with the ever-growing wine industry in the area. He also said the location for Angry Troll right in the heart of downtown Elkin would create another great gathering place for area residents and tourists alike.

“We really believe in bringing this brewery right here to Main Street and the energy that we hope to inject into our pedestrian area downtown, along with other locations like 222 Public House and the many beautiful art galleries and antique shops. It gives people a gathering place, another point of interest for any of the tourists here to visit the wineries for example and for those people who are not wine drinkers.”

Jeroslow and Head Brewer Kevin Stainback said they were thrilled with the turnout for Thursday night’s event.

“We put a few of the beers together tonight for our meet and greet event and were pretty excited to finally be able to bring it to Elkin,” Stainback said.

For the last year the group has worked to secure trademarks for its unique name and refine the recipes that will be used to make the beers and Stainback said it was “very cool” to see it all come together and be able to watch people in the community enjoy the beer.

In addition to Stainback and Jeroslow, the team also includes partners Cicely McCulloch, Dee Coley, Bob Puckett and Jeff Gibbs, who were on hand pouring tastings at the event.

Stainback said he liked all of the 11 brews that were poured for the event, but the Single Hop Series IPA was one of his favorites.

The Peach Pilsner was also popular among guests at the event.

Morgan Harrison, who attended the tasting event, said the Coffee Stout was his favorite. Not typically a fan of fruit-infused beers, Harrison did say he was intrigued by the flavor of the Raspberry Red Ale which he called “different.”

Also on the tasting list was a unique Hibiscus Tea Wheat beer, a Chocolate Milk Stout and several varieties of IPA. Brewery partner Cicely McCulloch said the English Style Bitter was her favorite.
