Elkin Police Department reported the following incidents and arrests.
• While conducting a drivers license checkpoint on North Bridge Street at the Elkin Rescue Squad on Aug. 9, a silver convertible stopped abruptly and pulled in to the yard of a vacant house just north of the checkpoint. The officer drove to the area and approached the vehicle. The officer observed a white male at the right front of the car who immediately fled on foot west into the bushes behind the home. The officer cleared the vehicle and began to give chase while yelling commands. The officer then came across a white female identified as Tonya Sue Mayberry, 39, of North Bridge Street, hiding behind a large bush in the middle of the yard. Once backup arrived, the officer detained her while he searched for the male. The officer then located Michael Charles Carter, 44, of North Bridge Street, hiding behind a tree in the woods behind the house. A search of the vehicle revealed a blue and silver glass smoking device with a small amount of burnt marijuana inside. The officer cited and released both subjects.
• On Aug. 8, officers served a criminal summons in person on Garry Alan Crapps, 51, of East Robin Street, without incident at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
• Officers spoke with the Walmart Loss Prevention manager on Aug. 9 regarding concealment of merchandise. Management advised that they observed Cathy Creed Jackson, 49, of Groce Road in Yadkinville, conceal several fishing-related items in her purse while still inside the store. Management advised that all of the items were recovered and that the total value of the items concealed was $26.66. A citation was issued for concealment of merchandise and Jackson was given a court date of Oct. 13.
