Aug. 5

• 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., “Eat A Rack, Save A Rack,” join 13 Bones and the Surry Cancer Awareness Team for dinner at 13 Bones, 502 S. Andy Griffith Pkwy., Mount Airy. Come out and support the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Northwest NC. Meal consist of 1/4 rack of ribs, 6-ounce filet, two sides and roll, non-alcoholic beverage (cash bar available) and a special dessert. There will be a silent auction and door prizes, and all ticket holders are registered to win a $50 13 bones gift certificate. Tickets are $25 each or two for $40, available at 13 Bones or from any SCAT member. Take-out is available. Call ahead, orders can be picked up at any time Aug. 5.

Aug. 7

• 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Port-A-Pit Chicken fundraiser for The Ark at the Elkin Rescue Squad on North Bridge Street. Tickets are available now at $9 each and meals can be brought to an office if there is an order for $20 or more in orders. For more information, contact Lora Evans at [email protected]

Aug. 7-9

• 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dark Mountain Powwow will be held at W. Kerr Scott Dam Reservoir. The event, including dancing, crafts and more, is free.

Aug. 11

• 6:30 p.m., the next Peace Jam will be at the Peace Pole, located on West Main Street beside Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church. Bring an instrument, if you play, and a lawn chair. Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. This event is to promote peace in the world through prayer and music.

Aug. 15

• 7 to 10 a.m., community breakfast will be served for the tractor cruise/show fee is $10 per entry. Sponsored by the Windsor’s Crossroads Ruritan Club. Proceeds go to those in need in the community.

• 8 to 10 a.m., 11th annual Tractor Cruise/Show at Windsors’ Crossroads Community Building, 5101 Windsor Road, Hamptonville. Take a scenic cruise on a tractor though the beautiful Hamptonville community. Those not wanting to cruise may still display a tractor. Breakfast is by donations. No ATVs.

Aug. 20

• 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., West Yadkin School will have a Parent Meeting/Open House. Parents may attend an informational meeting in their child’s grade level for the first session or the second session at 6 p.m. Car rider numbers and/or bus assignments will be given out in the multipurpose room. A “Books Only” Book Fair will be in the Media Center from 5 to 7 p.m. West Yadkin car magnets will be available for a $5 donation to support PBIS program. Aug. 27 & 29

• 7 p.m., Alleghany County will host the performance of Western Piedmont Symphony, Music in the Park, in the Alleghany County Community Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at Sparky’s Coffee Shop, Becca’s Backwoods Bean, The Alleghany County Library, and the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce. Tickets also can be purchased for this event, and other performances by the Western Piedmont Symphony by visiting www.wpsymphony.org.

• 6 to 8 p.m., each Monday, DivorceCare is a support group that meets at 147 Carter Mill Road, Elkin. It is designed for those hurting from the pain of separation and/or divorce. This group will begin meeting Aug. 17. For more information, call Gwen at 336-244-4682.

• 6 p.m., a monthly Alzheimer’s support group will be held every second Tuesday at Chatham Nursing & Rehab Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin. If area schools are closed due to inclement weather the group will not meet. For more information, call 336-567-7600.

• Noon to 1 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month, a free informational webinar is held for those interested in learning about the Guardian ad Litem program.
