Free SBC seminars announced for August


DOBSON — The Small Business Center at Surry Community College will be holding several free seminars and workshops in August at various locations in Surry and Yadkin counties.

An Entrepreneurs Guide to Bridging the Digital Divide will be covered at a seminar held Aug. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain. This course will educate business owners on web-based resources and tools that can help streamline day-to-day operations for their business and alleviate stress from the digital world. The goal is to help raise the level of comfort and understanding when it comes to the Internet as it continues to embed itself into more and more areas of one’s business. Topics covered include website tracking using Google Analytics, search engine optimization, blogging platforms, WordPress, social media basics, and many web-based applications that are free to use online such as Evernote, Dropbox, AnyMeeting, and Mint. The speaker will be Boomer Sassman, owner of Big Boom Designs.

Turn Your Passion Into a Small Business on Etsy will be the subject of a seminar held Aug. 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. Etsy is a rapidly growing online marketplace for selling handmade goods, vintage items and craft supplies. With more than 30 million members, there’s no better place to launch your own creative small business. In fact, sellers took home over $860 million in sales in 2012 alone. Learn how to register and start selling on Etsy. Share the story of your craft in your profile, item photos, and shop banner. You will be guided through planning the basics of your small business strategy and given an in-depth look at Etsy’s tools to help you succeed online. Speaker Nick Hawks is an eBay certified specialist.

A Word Press Workshop will be conducted on Aug. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Elkin Center. Blogging is a powerful way to showcase your expertise and value as a Small Business. Attendees of this workshop will actually begin to build their first business blog and learn the basics steps needed to take their blog to a level that will help to grow their business. Speaker Teddy Burriss is the owner of Burriss Consulting.

Make a Splash without Much Cash will be explained at a seminar on Aug. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Surry Community College Small Business Center, Dobson. Marketing doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. This workshop will teach you how to draw customers to your business without breaking the bank. You’ll learn low-cost (and some NO-cost) methods of building your business, such as how to create an un-brochure, selling the business by selling YOU, and how to maximize your effectiveness while minimizing your expenditures. Speaker Russ Seagle, is a consultant with Premier Entrepreneurship Group.

Every Customer is a Guest, Every Employee a Concierge will be explained at a seminar on Aug. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville. If your business depends on excellent customer interactions, this seminar will help everyone from the front line to the corner office deliver better, faster service, increase customer joy, better manage stressful customer encounters, bounce back from service failures, and serve as a trusted “concierge,” giving people a reason to come back again and again. Speaker Russ Seagle is a consultant with Premier Entrepreneurship Group.

Pinterest Made Easy will be discussed on Aug. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville. If you have a business where visuals are important, then you want to be on Pinterest. There are ways to drive traffic to your website and other social media outlets using Pinterest. Learn how to start your business Pinterest page, create your own images for Pinterest sharing, build followers on Pinterest, and use applications to integrate Pinterest with your other marketing. Speaker will be Chisa Pennix-Brown of Lady Bizness.
