Community Calendar


Submission guidelines for calendar events: One-time events may be submitted for placement in the calendar at least two weeks prior to the date of the event. Information should include date, time, place, brief description and contact information, if necessary. Calendars are published as space permits and do not run in every issue of the paper. If a submission is not showing, it is due to the chronological order of the events. Events to be included are at our discretion, and information is subject to editing. March 20

• The South Carolina Broadcasters will perform live old-time and early bluegrass music in the style and tradition of Surry County in Room A-121 at Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, and the free performance is open to the public. The three-piece professional group will play the fiddle, banjo and guitar while also providing informative commentary regarding the social and historical context of one of Surry County’s richest traditions. There will be three segments, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

March 22

• 2 to 6:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Rockford Elementary School, 719 Rockford Road, Dobson.

• 5:30 to 7 p.m., the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Elected Officials Reception at Cedarbrook Country Club, 225 Country Club Drive, State Road, giving those attending a chance to meet and greet with area elected officials. To reserve a spot, call 336-526-1111.

• 6 to 8 p.m., the Foothills Arts Council, 129 Church St., Elkin., Creative Writing Club meets twice a month for the purpose of encouraging one another to write, to pursue publishing, to share ideas, and to provide and receive feedback on writing. • The Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop on West Main Street in downtown Elkin will have a three-day bag sale, where shoppers can fill a brown paper bag for $5. The store, which sales clothes, shoes, toys, books and housewares, will be open Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also, the shop will be closed March 27 through April 1 to stock the shelves with new items and will reopen April 3. All proceeds from sales at the shop benefit health care in the community.

March 24

• The eighth annual Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be held at Surry Central High School in Dobson. The event begins Friday with a 7 p.m. square dance headlined by the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters and Whitetop Mountain Band, and includes a cake walk. On Saturday, youth competition begins at 11 a.m., with adults competition beginning at 3 p.m. Winners will receive cash prizes. Admission is $5 daily, with children 12 and younger admitted free. Proceeds will benefit Hope Swain, who was born in 2007 with a brain defect, she was diagnosed with holoprosencephaly. • The third annual Carolina in the Fall Music and Food Festival will be held on Main Street, Wilkesboro, including The Kruger Brothers as hosts. Line-up includes The Kruger Brothers, The Kontras Quartet, The Black Lillies, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, The Snyder Family Band, Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys and more. The event will include the second annual Chad Lovette Memorial Run and Ride on Sept. 23 on the trails at Cub Creek Park in downtown Wilkesboro, to benefit the American Cancer Society. Festival tickest are available at www.carolinainthefall.org with round one pricing being $45 for a two-day pass, and a VIP package that includes both days and evening jam sessions for $90. Single-day and round two pricing are not available until June 1.
