The Elkin Police Department sent a reminder out that as of July 1, the moped laws in the state of North Carolina will change.
Effective July 1, a moped will be required by the Division of Motor Vehicles to be registered. The owner of the moped shall pay the same fees as a motorcycle owner would. They will be given a registration plate and registration card. In order for the vehicle to be registered, it will have to meet the following requirements: the moped has a manufacturer’s certificate of origin and the moped was designed and manufactured for use on the highways and public vehicular areas.
A moped is classified as a vehicle that has two or three wheels, no external shifting device, a motor that does not exceed 50 cc piston displacement and cannot propel the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 mph on a level surface.
