July 16

• 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host its school-age summer programs, which are free thanks to funding by the Friends of Elkin Public Library. Today’s program is Art Day with make and take of four super crafts.

• 2 to 6:30 p.m., a blood drive will be held at Grace Moravian Church, 1401 N. Main St., Mount Airy.

• 3:30 or 5 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host its summer activities for grades sixth through 12th. Today’s program is Laser Tag at Elkin Municipal Park, southend near the fire station, with permission form required by calling 336-835-5586.

July 17

• 10:15 a.m. & 11 a.m., Elkin Public Library holds Preschool Story Hour, a program for those 2 to 3 years old at 10:30 and those 4 to 5 years old at 11. Today’s program is Super Storybooks.

• 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., WomEnpowered Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Elkin, 2189 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Instructor is Holly Vaughn. Wear casual workout attire. RSVP by calling 336-835-5425 or emailing [email protected] Cost is $10 per class. Bring a friend. Held every first and third Friday. This special self-defense class is designed specifically for women ages 12 and older. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

July 17 & 18

• The Alleghany Fairgrounds on U.S. 21 North, Sparta, will host bluegrass and old-time competition for bands and individuals in adult and youth categories at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Admission is $6 for Friday, $7 for Saturday and $10 for both days. The event is sponsored by the Sparta-Alleghany Fire Department. • 8 p.m., Wounded Warrior Project Benefit: Empire Wrestling Alliance Presents Bridge Street Brawl at the Elkin National Guard Armory. All proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project. • 11 a.m., the original Royal-Miles-Brooks reunion will be held at Liberty Knob Baptist Church on Oklahoma Road near Roaring Gap. The picnic lunch and reunion will follow the grave decoration services at 10 a.m. and church services at 11 a.m. The public is invited. • 2:30 to 7 p.m., blood drive will be held at Temple Hill United Methodist Church, 1192 Somers Road, Ronda.

• 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Elkin Public Library will host its summer activities for grades sixth through 12th. Today’s program is Great Big Faces with Paul Merklin from New York teaching how to draw cartoon-like superheroes.

• 6:30 p.m., Elkin Public Library’s adult summer readline program “Escape the Ordinary” will be held with today’s program “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, It’s … Birdwatching for Families.” Discover birds and flowers on the E&A Rail Trail and learn how to use the library’s new collection of binoculars.

July 24

• The second annual U.S. Highway 21 three-day Road Market Sale. Local residents are gearing up to either shop or sell along the 110-mile route. Wytheville, Virginia, is the northern end of the Road Market Sale, extended 40 miles south this year to include Harmony in Iredell County. Laura Gaylord, Elkin’s Main Street and community manager, has signs available for town residents wanting to have yard sales along the route, People planning to set up anywhere other than their own residences need to get permission from the owners beforehand. • 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dark Mountain Powwow will be held at W. Kerr Scott Dam Reservoir. The event, including dancing, crafts and more, is free.

Ongoing

• 6 to 8 p.m., each Monday, DivorceCare is a support group that meets at 147 Carter Mill Road, Elkin. It is designed for those hurting from the pain of separation and/or divorce. This group will begin meeting Jan. 26. For more information, call Gwen at 336-244-4682.

• Noon to 1 p.m., the first Wednesday of each month, a free informational webinar is held for those interested in learning about the Guardian ad Litem program.
