DOBSON — Surry Community College will be offering a series of workshops on winegrapes this fall. Participants may take any or all of the seminars for one registration cost of $20.
Classes will begin at the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson; and move to the vineyard for the hands-on portion of the presentation.
Cover Cropping Strategies will be examined on Sept. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. Students will learn how to manage water, nutrients and erosion with cover crop. Perennial and annual cover cropping methods are essential in N.C. vineyards, and application timing is critical.
Harvest Operations will be covered on Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be a day of harvest operations and seeing first-hand what it takes to make a bottle of wine. Participants will pick fruit from the vineyard, and then process it in the winery.
Trunk Disease Management will be covered on Oct. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. Trunk disease is one of the silent killers of the grapevine. Typically, once producers realize they have an issue, the only alternative is to re-train or re-plant. This workshop will provide the skills necessary to prevent trunk disease in a vineyard. Students also will review disease life cycle, identification, and methods of re-training.
A Pruning Workshop will take place Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This workshop will provide essential principles and practices of grapevine pruning. It will include both classroom and field sessions to introduce important concepts and key techniques related to quality assurance, crop yield, and disease mitigation. Attendants will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience in our campus vineyard, and implement various pruning styles.
Class fee of $20 covers the cost of one class or the entire series. Advanced registration and payment are required prior to the class date to ensure that handouts and materials are prepared for each participant.
Those who register and pay for this Winegrape Series by Sept. 16 will be eligible for a 20-percent discount to the fourth annual Southeastern United Grape and Wine Symposium to be held at Surry Community College on Nov. 5. For more information on the symposium, visit symposium.surry.edu.
