EAST BEND — Friday night pitted the Starmount Rams and Forbush Falcons against one another in the Unifi Bowl, but perhaps the biggest play of the night happened before the game.

On the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in 2001, the pregame ceremony was one of the most patriotic displays a sports fan will ever see. Veterans, JROTC and the fans all came together as one to share a truly touching moment together. Rivals on the field, Starmount and Forbush ignored their differences and played “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” as one united band.

On the field, the Starmount Rams defeated the Forbush Falcons for their 10th straight win in the Unifi Bowl, but seniors Brandon Prescott and Andrew Smythers said the fact the game was on Sept. 11 gave the game a larger meaning.

“I love our country and I love being an American, and that helped motivate me,” Smythers said.

“Just knowing that people sacrificed their lives to try and save people, it’s a good feeling to come out here and play,” Prescott said.

Many of these young men playing in Friday’s football game were not even in elementary school when the planes struck the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania 14 years ago. However, Friday night, they were able to experience something much larger than football, and much larger than themselves.
