Hugh Chatham launches mobile app

Program includes online check-in for express, urgent care

Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital has launched a mobile app available to download for free in an Android version in the Google Play Store and in an iPhone version in the Apple App Store. The community health care network designed the app with features that allow users to find a physician, get turn-by-turn directions to the hospital and its affiliated medical offices, access patient portals, check the ER wait time, direct dial an advice nurse, and even see the cafeteria menu.

The app also has an online check-in feature for Hugh Chatham’s Express Care and Urgent Care facilities so that incoming patients will know that the health care provider is expecting them when they arrive and will likely have a shorter wait onsite. Patients can see what the wait times are at each location before making a selection. After submitting the secure online form, they will receive an email or text message confirming their check-in. Hugh Chatham operates an Express Care location in Dobson and Urgent Care practices in Jonesville and Yadkinville.

“Online check-in may be a great option when your primary care physician is not able to schedule you, or when you want to take advantage of some of our services including vaccinations, blood tests and school, sports or work physicals,” said Mary Blackburn, vice president of Market Growth and Development for the Hugh Chatham healthcare network. She added that walk-in care at those facilities will continue to be available without an appointment.

Blackburn said people also will appreciate the ability to keep secure notes about their medications using the app. She explained they can input the name of a medication, the dosage level, the type of medication (for example, liquid, pill or injection) and then they can take a picture of the medication label. “It can be very helpful to have all of your medication information at your fingertips when you’re at a medical appointment and are asked for that information, or if you are traveling and become ill and forget to bring the medication, needing a prescription,” she said.

Other features of the mobile app include the ability to check on weather-related delays or closings for Hugh Chatham medical practices, and the ability to read Hugh Chatham news and view social media updates through links to the organization’s news releases, Facebook and Twitter feeds, and YouTube channel. The app also allows access to a wellness class calendar for the Hugh Chatham Aquatic & Wellness Center in Elkin. Classes at the center range from yoga and tai chi to Boot Camps and land and aquatic Zumba classes.

“Hugh Chatham developed this mobile app to make it easier for people to manage their health through features like being able to quickly get to the patient portal to request a medical appointment, and by being able to securely store information about prescription medications so that they will always have easy access to that information from their smartphone or tablet,” said Blackburn.

“In the Hugh Chatham health care network, we have an intentional focus on leveraging technology to make health care easier for patients and to keep them and their information safe, which is why we were named a ’Most Wired’ Hospital in the country last year. We hope that people will download the app to try it, and then use our Facebook page and Twitter to tell us how they like it and any suggestions they have to improve it so that we can continue to develop new features and release updated versions in the future.”
