DOBSON — The Surry Community College Foundation will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its annual golf tournament on May 19 at Cross Creek Country Club in Mount Airy. To-date the tournament has raised $859,000 for student support through scholarships.

In 2015, the foundation event was officially renamed the Woltz-Harold Golf Tournament honoring the memory of long-time college advocates Pat Woltz, local artist, and Bobby Harold, owner of H&W Trucking Company, both who were revered as members of the Foundation Board of Directors and as community patrons. Bobby Harold and Jerry Venable, SCC alumnus, served as event co-chairs from the inception of the foundation tournament.

The tournament winners receive no prizes instead scholarships are awarded to students in the name of the top teams. The 2015 scholarship sponsors were: Marketing Associates, Thermo King Central Carolinas, iSurity, TruLine Truss, Golding Transport, Piedmont Peterbilt, Cooke Trucking, NCFI Polyurethanes, Advantage Truck Center, Vernon Produce, Triple C Transportation, and Blue Ridge Truck and Trailer.

The 2015 tournament brought 228 players from across the state. John and Olga Alvarez, tournament sponsors, traveled from Florida to honor their late friend, Bobby Harold. Mr. Alvarez and his son will attend this year’s event.

Justin Young, World Long Drive Championship Circuit player and former SCC golf team member will join the day’s event. He had a top eight finish in 2012 and 2015. His career Long Drive is 446 yds. Current SCC Golf team members will again participate by using their golfing skills to “Drive for Dollars” on hole number one. Dr. David Shockley, president of Surry Community College, and Justin Young appeared on WGHP Fox8 morning show on May 16 representing the college event.

A number of Hole In One prizes will be featured including: Ultimate Boston Red Sox VIP Experience, Disney World Family Adventure, John Deere Riding Mower, and a new automobile.

Golfers network with friends and business associates while enjoying a great day of golf. The day concludes with a dinner and tournament wrap up with the announcement of winners. Students, who

received scholarships from the previous year’s event are invited to join their scholarship sponsors and share their experiences as Surry students.

In celebration of its anniversary tournament, the Foundation is sponsoring a Farm to Table Dinner on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cross Creek Country Club pavilion. Chefs Chuck Gardner and David Swing will prepare a Four Course Dinner featuring local food products, Mayberry Spirits and Surry Cellars wines that are produced by students at Surry Community College. Dinner tables will be beautifully decorated in a farm and wine theme by local volunteers. Tickets are available by contacting [email protected] or by calling 336-386-3269.

2016 is also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the SCC Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports Surry Community College through student scholarships, fund raising activities and property acquisition.
