Surry Community offering free workshops to assist unemployed and underemployed


DOBSON — Surry Community College will be offering the following free workshops for unemployed and underemployed workers. No advanced registration is required.

• Sell Yourself in a Job Interview will be offered Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Participants will learn how to answer tough interview questions and most frequently asked interview questions in order to make a great impression during the interview.

• Networking Your Way to Success, Dress for Success With Career Gear will be offered Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Participants will learn important ways of networking with friends, relatives, acquaintances, direct employer contacts, and job information web sites to tap into the hidden job market. Participants will also master the skill of dressing for success and improving their total image.

• Make a Great Impression With Your Resume will be offered Oct. 6 and again Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Participants will learn resume design and layout tips. Attendees are welcome to bring in their existing resume for feedback. No resume, no problem. Instructors can also help individuals develop a resume.

• Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 1: Choosing to take charge and stay positive will be held Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. This is the first class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

• Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 2: Becoming the totally responsible person will be held Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin.

This is the second class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

• Stress Management, Budgeting on Less and Surviving a Layoff will be offered Oct. 20. A class from 10 a.m. to noon will be held at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin; and another class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 W. Pine St., Mount Airy. Participants will learn effective ways to cope with stress to become more productive and reduce burnout. They will also be informed on how to budget on less and survive a layoff in four steps.

• Moving Forward-Career Information will be offered Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Surry County Workforce Center (Employment Office), 541 W. Pine St., Mount Airy. Take the CAREER KEY and unlock the mystery to identify jobs most likely to satisfy you. Learn how to identify sources of career information. Help will be provided identifying training needs and locations. Information about the Career Readiness Certification will be provided.

• Totally Responsible Person Program: Part 3: Your Action Plan of Being the Best You will be held Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. This is the third class in a three-part series. A SCC certificate will be awarded after all sessions are completed.

• Your Personality and Job Preferences will be discussed on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Goodwill Career Connections, 1457 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Complete the Myers Briggs Type Personality Profile and identify your personality type. Find out which career or job best suits your personality type.
