Despite the rain, Captain Chris Leonard and Police Detective Mendy Peles collected medication from the community with Operation Medicine Drop on Saturday. The Elkin Police Department collected several large bags of medication, some that had expired in 1997. Elkin Police now has a drop box in the lobby of the department to dispose of old, unused medication. Operation Medicine Drop was supported by the Elkin Valley Trails Association and the Yadkin River Keeper to help keep rivers and land pollution free of medication.
