Detectives were on the way to 244 Hiatt Road Sunday night, the scene of what emergency services officials are describing as a fatal shooting shortly after 7 p.m.

While little information was available as the investigation has yet to get fully under way, county Emergency Services Director John Shelton said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

“This scene is being treated as a crime scene,” he said, noting that the victim was a 41-year-old male.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the victim died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head,

“The State Bureau of Investigation is en route to assist with processing the crime scene,” Atkinson said, noting that county detectives will be handling the criminal investigation.

Atkinson said a suspect in the shooting has been identified, and is on the scene with investigators.

Shelton said officials believe the shooting began as a domestic disturbance.

Further information was not available last night, as Shelton said there were multiple witnesses to interview.

“It’s going to be a little while before we know what happened,” he said. “We’re going to have to get a lot of statements.”
