With the 100th anniversary celebration just less than four months away, the Elkin Fire Department is reaching out to those in the area for any pictures or memorabilia that organizers can use.
An open house is scheduled for Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the community to help the fire department celebrate, and each of the 100 days leading up to the celebration, the 100th anniversary committee members will be posting pictures, safety tips, information on the firefighters and other posts to a Facebook page that will go live July 4 — Elkin Fire Department Auxiliary.
“We are doing an all call for photos, stories, history, so if anyone has pictures of old firefighters, or stories to tell, we would love them,” said Elkin firefighter Theresa Knops, who with George Crater and Jane Hendrick make up the anniversary committee.
Those with items to contribute can do so by bringing them by the Elkin Fire station, 304 Front Street, or email them to email@example.com.
“We are super excited, and the open house is open to everyone,” Knops said.
She said the day will include station tours, equipment on display featuring price tags of what everything costs so taxpayers get an idea of where they money is being used, activities for kids and more.
“We are going to the school to have the kids do EDITH, Exit Drills in the Home, and if they bring their EDITH plans in, they’ll get a prize,” Knops said.
For those who are homeschooled or miss EDITH at the school, plans will be available at the open house for those wanting to fill them out.
