BOONVILLE —Tuesday was the second day of a three-day volleyball clinic for rising fifth- through 12th-graders at Starmount High School.

There was little wasted motion and little downtime for more than 40 participants who were directed by Starmount coaches Jon Symons and Taylor Vestal and 2014 Starmount graduate Erin Barr.

The clinic was not just for Starmount players of Starmount-bound players. There were participants from “all of Yadkin County,” Vestal said, including many from the Wilkes Central district.

“This is a blast,” Symons said. “It’s fun to see all the young kids out here trying to get better in a three-day clinic. We get kids from different high schools; different middle schools.

“This is something we can do to give back to the community.”

At least part of the attraction to a volleyball clinic is the success of the Starmount program. The Rams are coming off a state championship season - their second state championship in four seasons.

“This is the fun part,” Symons said. “We get a little better. We enjoy each other’s company.

“The stressful stuff comes in the fall.”
