Will Altemueller fired a three-hitter and Seth Haynes tripled twice as Elkin downed East Wilkes, 5-1, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game Friday night.
Altemueller, a sophomore, threw an economical 93 pitches, walking one and striking out eight.
“Will did an amazing job,” Elkin Coach Steve Martin said. “He kept his composure after he balked in a run. He could have fell to pieces there.”
“Their pitcher was outstanding,” East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said. “I can only think of one ball we hit hard.
“Hat’s off to [Elkin]. They made the plays they had to make.”
Haynes, batting in the leadoff spot, had a two-run triple in the second inning to give the Buckin’ Elks a 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, he tripled again. Altemueller followed with a single to put Elkin up 5-1. Haynes also had a single and stole a base.
“It makes a big difference when the leadoff batter does his job,” Martin said, adding his team “hasn’t been hitting the ball well.
“It was the most solid game we’ve had all season. We’re making strides.”
Zach Crabb started for the Cardinals, going 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walking three, and striking out four.
“He pitched better,” Welborn said. “He got to 100 pitches; that was enough.”
“The first two runs they got were on errors,” Welborn said. “The next two - they lead off with a little (infield) hit. It was just a little hit, but it led to something.
“It’s the little things we can’t do that we have to do.”
Crabb had two hits for East Wilkes.
East Wilkes is at North Surry today. Elkin is at North Wilkes Tuesday.
