DOBSON — A 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after succumbing to injuries sustained in a motorcycle wreck on Wednesday evening.
Jacob Chance Beck, of 870 Zephyr Road, was riding his motorcycle when he allegedly lost control and merged into oncoming traffic on U.S. 601 and West Mount Herman Church Road.
The Dobson incident happened at 6:40 p.m.
According to police, also involved in the incident was Jerry Hodge, an officer with the Mount Airy Police Department who was off-duty and driving a Dodge pick-up truck.
“The incident was a freak accident. No charges are being filed in the fatality,” said Trooper Gallimore with North Carolina Highway Patrol. “He (Hodge) tried to avoid the accident, but couldn’t.”
Surry County EMS Director John Shelton said Beck lost control and went head on into the pick-up truck. “The motorcycle crossed the center line,” he said.
According to Shelton, Beck was on a motorcycle ride with his father who was on another motorcycle ahead of his son. The duo were heading back toward Dobson. It is unknown how Beck lost control of his motorcycle.
“We ended with three traffic fatalities yesterday,” said Shelton. “Speed was a primary factor in the two fatalities we had over in State Road. People need to slow down. However, speed was not a factor in the bike accident…and this was just a sad day for all of us.”
