With the coming spring weather comes prom season at area high schools, and one local church is hoping to give young ladies who may not otherwise be able to afford a dress, a chance to be the belle of the ball.

“This is the first time we’ve ever done this,” said Debbie Garner, who is one of the key organizers of Project Prom Dress for Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in State Road.

The church has been collecting donated prom dresses for about two months and are up to 45 to 50 available dresses to give away, and now the members of the Sisters in Christ group at the church are looking for girls to wear the dresses … free of charge.

“They are all different sizes. We thought it would be a good opportunity for somebody that might need a little help getting a prom dress,” said Garner of the project. “We are trying to get the word out.”

On Saturday, the church group will host a luncheon event from 11:30 a.m. to about 2 p.m., which will start out with the lunch and then give the girls the opportunity to “shop” for their dress from among the choices. “They don’t pay anything. They will be picking out and getting fitted for their dress,” said Garner.

“We are open to all area high school girls from Alleghany, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin,” she said, noting that only a handful of girls are signed up at this point and she hopes for many more girls to be helped.

“We want to make somebody feel special and know that they are beautiful in whatever dress they wear,” Garner said. “We have goody bags we’ve put together and they do have some makeup samples in them and lotion and things like that.”

She said Sisters in Christ meets once a month to do projects in the community. About two months ago, the group announced in church and in the newsletter that they would be collecting dresses. Then Garner said she posted it on Facebook and “it spread from there.”

The group does need to know what girls plan on attending Saturday to make sure they have enough dresses and selections in the correct sizes. Garner said they planned on buying a few if they needed to to make sure all the girls who are attending have something they can select.

Girls interested in participating in Project Prom Dress can RSVP for Saturday’s luncheon and dress “shopping” event by calling Garner at her office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. until Friday at 336-835-1993 or by calling the church secretary at 336-874-2875.

Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church is on Pleasant Ridge Road off U.S. 21 in the State Road area.
