YADKINVILLE — Did you know that the uninsured rate for farmers is about 30 percent and 50 percent for loggers? This coupled with the fact that these individuals work in the most dangerous occupations in our state is a very important reason for them to have health insurance.
North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Yadkin County Center, will host an Affordable Care Act information and enrollment session in conjunction with the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute on March 28 at 209 E. Elm St. in Yadkinville. Session hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fishers, farmers, loggers and other individuals needing help with enrollment or wishing to learn more about whether or not they qualify for tax credits or subsidies to assist with the cost of health insurance under the Affordable Care Act are encouraged to attend. Advanced registration is required.
To register or for more information, contact Colleen Church with N.C. Cooperative Extension at 336-679-2061. The last day for regular enrollment for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act for 2014 is March 31.
Depending on family size and income, individuals may be eligible for a tax credit and/or subsidy to assist with cost of private health insurance. Income eligibility is based on modified adjusted gross income. Net income from farming, fishing or logging is considered but assets such as equipment are not. As each individual situation is different, all individuals not having health insurance are encouraged to complete an enrollment session to determine their eligibility.
The North Carolina Agromedicine Institute recently received federal funding to: 1) provide education about the benefits of health coverage, new health insurance options and eligibility for tax credit and subsidy under the Affordable Care Act; and 2) assist individuals with the enrollment process. Information about provisions for small businesses under the Affordable Care Act is also available although businesses wishing to enroll will need to do so with a local agent.
