RONDA — East Wilkes opened their girls soccer season with a 9-0 victory over visiting North Surry Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward Melia Higgins scored four goals — the fourth coming in the fourth minute of play in the second half as the Cardinals improved to 1-0.
East Wilkes Matt Campbell said “a highlight” from Wednesday night was their play, both offensively and defensively, in midfield.
Campbell said that he was pleased with the team’s performance for the opening game of the season. He also complimented the Lady Greyhounds on their good sportsmanship and hard play all throughout the game.
The Cardinals next play at Mount Airy Tuesday.
Also in Ronda Wednesday night, East Wilkes fell to North Surry, 7-3.
East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said Zach Crabb “pitched well. He might have gotten a little tired at the end. I am pleased with what he did.”
Welborn said North Surry’s first three runs came after the inning began with an error, a walk, and an error.
“We just made too many mistakes,” Welborn said. “I can think of five errors that were made. Just routine stuff. We can’t do that.
“And still it was 7-3.”
The Cardinals loaded the bases twice, but could only produce one run. Once, they loaded the bases with no outs and didn’t score. The other time they had one out and could only score once.
“We still had a chance to win,” Welborn said. “I thought we swung the bat better. We got six or seven hits. We just didn’t get them at the right time.”
The Cardinals, now 0-3, are set to host Walkertown Saturday immediately following the JV game which starts at 1 p.m.
North Surry improves to 2-1.
