The town of Elkin released an updated outstanding property tax list during its annual retreat on Feb. 23.
According to the document release, uncollected taxes due the town stand at $24,714 for 2012 and $14,382 for 2011.
The outstanding tax list includes Balsalt/Lake District Properties, Charlie Hamm, Richard Souther, Richard Harris, Elkin Lube, and Ruby Joyce. Additional taxpayers rounding off the top of the list are under bankruptcy protection, the estate of a deceased taxpayer, or are in a repayment agreement with the town.
One account settled with the town of Elkin on Tuesday morning was for Nu-Line Printing and Photography.
“I just walked into the town and paid the taxes in full,” said Eddie Settle of Nu-Line Printing and Photography. Settle is also a Wilkes County commissioner.
Settle said that he was totally unaware of an outstanding personal property tax list, and that prior taxes for Nu-Line were handled by his mother who no longer attends to such matters.
When asked if unpaid taxes can cause tax increases in the future, an Elkin official said an increase is always possible.
“Each year, we estimate the amount of property tax revenue we will receive (not the amount billed). If these revenues fall short of what we need in the general fund to cover necessary operating costs and capital outlay, then the board might consider other options such as raising the property tax rate,” said John Holcomb, Elkin’s finance director.
