It took nearly 40 hours of the new year before a baby was born at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, but at 3:49 p.m. Thursday, the first baby of 2014 arrived.

Landon Reid Brown weighed in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 20.5 inches long. His parents are Lauren Elizabeth and Justin Lee Brown of Elkin.

“I want him to be the first baby,” said Lauren Friday morning.

She had hoped to be induced New Year’s Eve, but it didn’t work out. She said she was afraid he wouldn’t be the first of 2014 when the induction wasn’t scheduled until Jan. 2.

“I didn’t think he’d be able to be the first, but he was,” she said smiling.

Lauren was induced at 7 a.m.

“He’s so cute,” she said of her first child.

The staff at Hugh Chatham presented the new parents with two large boxes of diapers, a crocheted baby blanket and a basket of goodies like a bear bank, balloons and more.

Landon’s grandparents are Keith Brown of Hamptonville, Barbara Brown of Wilkesboro, Lewis Brown of Jonesville and Stephanie Brown of Courtney.

His great-grandparents are Margaret and Gilbert Brown of Yadkinville, Dorothy Shermer of Hamptonville and Bobby Moody of Courtney.
