BOONVILLE — North Surry fought back from an early deficit and grabbed a 47-43 non-conference road win over Starmount on Friday night.
Marcus Sawyers scored a game-high 16 points for the Greyhounds, who improved to 5-2 on the season.
North trailed 17-11 after the first quarter, but held the Rams to just 25 points the rest of the way as the Hounds got back in the game.
“The first half, we took too many jump shots, too many quick shots,” North coach Kevin King said. “The second half, we got the ball in the lane and did a better job of finishing. We got some stops defensively, got rebounds, and made free throws down the stretch. I thought as we got inside the last five minutes, we finally started getting the basketball to the front of the rim.”
Kendal Tucker also hit double figures for North with 10 points. The Greyhounds have won four straight, beating Ashe County, Mount Airy and North Wilkes coming into the Starmount game.
King said Sawyers had a solid all-around game with four assists, four steals and five rebounds.
“Sawyers missed some shots early, and he struggled for three quarters. Looks he normally makes weren’t going down,” King said. “Once he got to the free throw line, and knocked in couple free throws, it built his confidence. He got to the rim, and got himself going. It’s not just scoring. He fills up the stat sheet. He impacts the game in a lot of ways for us.”
It was the third time in four games North has held an opponent under 50 points. Gunner Cass paced Starmount with 13 points. Trey Bryant chipped in with 10.
The Greyhounds outscored the Rams 18-8 in the decisive fourth quarter.
“I told our guys, when you hold people under 50 points, you give yourself a chance,” King said. “If you can do that night in night out, you’ll have opportunities to win some games. That’s one thing we have proven so far this season.”
North travels to East Surry on Tuesday.
