ELKIN — Elkin quarterback Josh Strickland has been named The Tribune Offensive Player of the Year.

Strickland guided the Buckin’ Elks to a 6-6 mark and a berth into the 1A state playoffs, while racking up 2,347 yards of total offense and 31 touchdowns.

The third-year starter threw for 2,076 yards through the air with 21 touchdowns, finishing only behind newly-crowned Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year L.J. Hendren (North Wilkes) in both categories. Strickland completed nearly 49 percent of his passes (148-for-305) with only 11 interceptions.

The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 271 yards on 63 carries (a 4.30 average) with 10 more scores on the ground to power the Elks.

Honorable Mentions: Starmount’s Will Simpson (1,174 total yards, 20 TDs), Elkin’s Kody King (42 rec, 850 yards, 14 TDs) and East Wilkes’ Jathan Sales.
