The Elkin Tribune’s online costume contest ended Sunday at 11:59 p.m. with the grand prize going to Melissa Long of Hamptonville.
Parent company Civitas Media awards the grand prize winner with a check for $175, with $70 prizes going to each category winner that had a sponsor. This year’s category sponsors were the “cutest” categoy sponsored by Blue Ridge Women Center and the “most original” category sponsored by Alps Mtn. Affordable Hearing.
The winner of the $175 grand prize and who won the most votes (309) went to Melissa Long of Hamptonville. Long entered her son Reece dressed as Mario from Super Mario Brothers video games and cartoon characters. Even though Long was entered in the Cutest Category, his vote tally won him overall status during the five-week contest.
Cutest Category winner and recipient of $70 was the “Construction Kid.” With only one vote, it goes to show you have to enter to win. “Construction Kid” was entered by Gwynn Pardue of Hamptonville.
Most Original category winner and second highest vote-getter was Mallory Matthews of Yadkinville. Matthews’ mom Terri entered the “Proud Peacock” complete with detailed face-painting and winged costume accounting for her 290 online votes and her $70 winnings.
Honorable mentions, who do not receive prizes, are the “Thing 1 and Thing 2 Family” of the funniest category submitted by Amanda Stanley and the Ghost of “The Haunting” Madison McLamb of Fall Creek Elementary School submitted by Veda Norman.
