KERNERSVILLE — East Wilkes’ Will Jolly continued his strong season on the cross country course Saturday at the 1A North Carolina High School Athletic Association Cross Country State Championship in Kernersville.
Coming off a dominating victory in the 1A Midwest Regional the week before at Ivey M. Redmon Park, Jolly raced to a fifth-place finish at state with a time of 16:41.
The junior was two seconds off his personal-best time of 16:39 he ran at regionals, but finished more than 50 seconds behind Mitchell’s Zach Boone, who blazed the course in 15:51 to win the individual title Saturday.
The Mountain Valley Conference Runner of the Year garnered All-State honors for the second-straight season, given to the top 10 runners.
Jolly will return next year to lead a strong East Wilkes team that also will feature freshman phenom Kyle Rhodes, who shined at the state meet.
On the heels of an All-Region selection with a ninth-place finish last week, Rhodes ran a 17:19 to cross the finish line in 14th-place — finishing as the top freshman in the field.
In the girls’ race, sophomore Taylor Tharpe posted a personal-best time of 20:49 to finish 13th.
The All-Region honoree will return next season to power the Lady Cardinals.
