The 53rd annual Community Chorus of Elkin rehearsals began on Thursday. This year, the chorus meets at the Elkin First United Methodist Church. Rehearsals are every Thursday for seven weeks from 7 to 9 p.m, but there is no rehearsal during Thanksgiving week.

According to Laura Gaylord, community manager for the town of Elkin, if those interested missed the first rehearsal on Oct. 17 that it’s not a problem. However, attendance at the next rehearsal on Oct. 24 is required in order to participate.

Gaylord has been an active participant in the choir and used to sing often in a choir in high school. She rediscovered her appreciation for singing after moving to Elkin.

“When I moved to Elkin years ago, I remember walking into a practice session and it was an instant feeling. They do a great job at making anyone with an interest feel welcomed,” said Gaylord.

According to Gaylord, the Community Chorus has about 100 singers with many coming from areas like Greensboro, Mount Airy, even Virginia.

“It’s a pretty big deal. People keep coming back and participating. The chorus even has one choir member that has attended every year since this community chorus began,” said Gaylord.

The performance will be on Dec. 8 at the First United Methodist Church. The performances are scheduled at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Each performance will be recorded. CDs will be available for purchase.

“If you are interested in joining the Community Chorus, there is no audition. You must be able to read music, as some of the selections, such as the Messiah, can be challenging,” said Gaylord. “It’s a great way to give e back to the community.”
